En el principio, casi no había azules. Estaba el cielo límpido y el agua cristalina del subsuelo, pero el ojo humano era incapaz de percibir el índigo, el añil, el cobalto. En su libro El prisma del lenguaje, el lingüista Guy Deutscher advierte que la palabra “azul” no existe en muchas de las culturas del mundo antiguo. De igual modo, como destaca la historiadora Luz María Vázquez, “el azul es poco mencionado en la cosmogonía maya, quizá porque la invención de este color fue tardía o posterior al pensamiento sobre el universo”. Así pues, cada civilización desarrolló, con diferentes tecnologías, formas de reconocer, nombrar y producir el azul a través de materiales disímiles. Por eso, dime cómo haces azul y te diré quién eres.
Las obras de esta exposición traen al presente una infinidad de texturas y una paleta cromática de antaño, de aquella época en que la persona no necesitaba más que tres o cuatro elementos para emprender la mímesis del mundo a través del arte: el rojo del kankab, la fibra del henequén, el “azul maya”, nombrado así por Rudolph Gettens en 1942. Con esta franca policromía, el museógrafo y restaurador Luciano Cedillo emprende una taumaturgia: conversa, como si hablara un código que se antoja mítico, con el arte que fue, y lo conjura hacia el porvenir. Las obras no están concebidas para estar aquí, bajo el cobijo de Casa Gemela, sino a la intemperie, cerca de los materiales que les dieron vida. Esa es la paradoja que conservan: son una ventana hacia otro tiempo, otro espacio y otro vocabulario visual.

A través de los vanos de sus arcos y ventanas se puede observar la belleza del edificio en ruinas, con la maquinaria antigua trabajando en su interor, transitando de lo histórico a lo arqueológico, negándose a desaparecer en el tiempo. Son estos vanos, de puertas y ventanas, los que nos dan la oportunidad de construir una nueva propuesta estética a partir de la producción de obras de gran formato, diseñadas ex profeso para este espacio; trayendo a la luz el empleo de antiguos materiales con nuevas propuestas formales a través de un diálogo entre el pasado y presente.
Este proyecto es una propuesta alejada de los museos, galerías y salas de exhibición tradicionales, recuperando el empleo de diversos materiales que pueden ser tan antiguos como la humanidad y al mismo tiempo brutalmente modernos, procesados a través de una fresca e inesperada dimensión original.
La intervención artística de la hacienda San Lorenzo presenta una extraordinaria oportunidad para conjugar los vestigios del pasado con un nuevo discurso estético basado en el arte contemporáneo, enfocado a la preservación de la arqueología y la reinterpretación de sus elementos etnográficos, rescatando los materiales empleados ancestralmente en la región maya, reutilizándolos con un nuevo lenguaje.
La piedra, madera, henequén, guano, zacate, cerámica y pigmentos como el Kankab, Saskab y el Azul Maya, tienen un lugar protagónico y una destacada presencia en esta intervención.
El maestro Cedillo tiene la licenciatura en Restauración de obras de arte, cursó estudios en Arqueología; posteriormente una Maestría en Artes Visuales por la Academia de San Carlos de la UNAM Ciudad de México y la Maestría en Museología.
Cuatro décadas se ha dedicado al arte, la restauración, investigación y docencia del Patrimonio Cultural de México; ha dirigido los proyectos más importantes de restauración en México como Palenque, Chichén Itzá, Kohunlich, Tulum, el Castillo de Chapultepec, Palacio Nacional, la casa del arquitecto Antonio Rivas Mercado, Casa Gemela y Casa Morisca en Mérida.
Ha tenidos diversas exposiciones individuales y colectivas a lo largo de su vida y su obra se encuentra en colecciones privadas de México, Alemania, Italia y España.
Su formación en el campo del Arte, la Restauración y la Arqueología, lo han llevado a la permanente necesidad de darle a su obra nuevos horizontes, realizando diversas investigaciones de las técnicas y materiales más antiguas como la pintura rupestre, los códices, los papeles, los pigmentos precolombinos y dentro de ellos la elaboración del legendario Azul Maya.
Su interés por los códices mayas y mexicas lo llevó a la fabricación del amate y otros papeles de fibras naturales que ha venido empleando en su producción personal.
